Montanha - English Note
Montanha Pico Festival
From the highest mountain in the north mid-Atlantic Ridge, on the island of Pico, Azores in Portugal, we send you greetings for a great end of year and an even better 2018.
The program for the fourth edition of Montanha Pico Festival will be launched on Monday, December 11 on International Mountain Day. The event will also see the opening of the award-winning photography exhibition, "Pico Mountain" by Nelson Silva at the Madalena Port, the entry point and area with the most pedestrian traffic in Pico. We are proud to also introduce a great achievement, the presentation of two national stamps (of the Portuguese Republic Philately) that include images of the highest points in Portugal: Pico Urse in Madeira island and the island mountain of Pico in the Azores.
January will see varied festival programming that includes a film section showcasing the latest films set on mountains, or with themes that encompass our mission of highlighting mountain culture; "The First Piper" Ross OC Jennings from the highland mountains of Scotland will join us for a bagpipers gathering and concert that will take place 2351 metres high on Mount Pico; youth groups will participate in the program "Climb Every Mountain" that encourages ideas outside the box; we will launch three books of poetry, stories and photography, and also host artistic residencies of various artists who will create theatre, dance, music and paintings on mountain themes.
This festival also marks 300 years since the last volcanic explosions on the island of Pico through an ilustration exhibition and school program in partnership with the Pico Natural Park and Geoparks Azores.
